Straightening teeth with metal or plastic braces was the treatment of choice for the past century. Though still popular today, more and more patients and dentists are switching to Invisalign, “the clear alternative to braces” that uses clear, smooth, medical grade aligners to gently shift the teeth into the desired position.
What Is Invisalign?
Instead of attached metal brackets and wires, Invisalign uses a series of customized, removable aligners. The patient wears each set of aligners for two weeks, 20-22 hours per day, or as directed, and then changes to the next set at home. Our office meets with the patient just once every six weeks to monitor progress.
Invisalign treatment begins with a 3-D digital model of the patient’s current smile. An imaging program morphs a series of stages to achieve an ideal alignment. We then use the model to craft your customized series of aligners and treatment plan.
Aesthetics and Comfort
Many kids care about first impressions whether we like it or not. They hate to flash a mouthful of metal in a classroom, on a ball field, at a recital, on a first date, in prom pictures, or when applying for a job. Invisalign clear, virtually invisible aligners let’s an adolescent or young adult feel confident enough to smile and laugh.
Invisalign is also a lot more comfortable than traditional braces. It has no sharp edges, and the aligners are far gentler than braces. No poking of metal wires, scratching of tongues, cheeks, and gums or adjustments that hurt.
With Invisalign, the patient and family has greater control than with metal braces. We place attachments on the teeth and teach the patient how to take the aligners in and out. The aligners can be removed for brushing and flossing, and when eating. When it is time for the next set of aligners, we change them and the patient continues to use them. Our office closely monitors your child but the treatment is more of a partnership, and makes your child feel that they have greater control and investment in the process. This is very different from metal or plastic braces where the dentist completely controls the process since brackets and wires need to be attached, adjusted, and removed. If a wire pops, a bracket loosens, or have any other emergency, an office visit is immediately needed and disrupts activities and routines. Food is a biggie! With metal braces, patient’s can’t eat popcorn, whole apples, or many other foods, and a whole new oral hygiene routine needs to be used.
Cost Considerations for Parents
Invisalign used to be significantly more expensive than traditional braces, but now it is priced competitively. Invisalign uses a transparent pricing model that includes all aligners and all visits. When comparing costs, most dentists charge additional fees to the base price for metal braces such cosmetic upgrades like clear or colored brackets and adjustment and emergency visits.
Dental insurance coverage for orthodontic procedures varies widely and is complicated. Our office staff will help you understand your plan and determine if the treatment plan is completely covered or what would be the would be the out of pocket costs.
